Celebrate eco-friendly Gauri-Ganesh Chaturthi
Udupi, Aug 26, 2022: Officials of the Pollution Control Board have appealed to the public to celebrate the Gauri-Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in an eco-friendly manner by installing idols made of clay and natural colors only.
The idol of Lord Ganesha, made of plain clay, and natural dye prepared out of leaves and flowers, can be installed without using the poisonous chemical, metal coated plaster of Paris.
Officials also appealed to the people not to use plastic materials for decorating the pandals. Immersion of Ganapati idols in wells, tanks, and streams can spoil the groundwater and drinking water sources. Therefore, the idols should be disposed of in a bucket or before being immersed in the prescribed lakes, the flower, cloth, and plastic garland should all be removed, and then the idol should be immersed, officials added.
“Bursting of firecrackers during the festival causes air pollution and noise pollution and damages the environment. Garbage should not be dumped on roads and drains,” the statement issued by the environment department added.
