Udupi, June 27, 2025: Blood donation is a noble act that helps save lives in times of emergency, said Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K.

She was speaking after inaugurating a blood donation camp held at Vajpayee Auditorium in the DC office complex in Manipal. The event was jointly organized by the district administration, Karnataka State Government Employees’ Association (Udupi district unit), District Hospital Blood Bank, and KMC Manipal Blood Bank.

The Deputy Commissioner highlighted that one unit of blood can save up to three lives, as it can be separated into components, each serving a different purpose. Over 100 donors enthusiastically participated in the camp. He praised government employees for contributing to such a socially responsible cause despite their busy schedules.

Dinkar Shetty, district president of the State Government Employees’ Association, noted that blood donation is a critical part of modern healthcare. Additional Deputy Commissioner Abid Gadyal emphasized that blood donation should not be limited to camps and anniversaries but extended to other events like birthdays.

District Surgeon Dr. Ashok stated that donated blood is used without distinction of caste or religion. Red blood cells can be stored for 35 days, platelets for 7 days, and plasma for up to a year. He urged women to also come forward for blood donation. Dr. Shami Shastri from KMC Blood Bank provided detailed information on donor eligibility.

During the event, frequent donors like Divakar (Assistant Director, Fisheries), Manjunath (Youth Empowerment Department), Yatish Kidiyoor (Revenue Department), Swathi, Lavanya, and Latha were felicitated. A total of 101 units of blood were collected.
