Mangaluru, July 10, 2023: Deputy Commissioner Mullai Mugilan has instructed officials to ensure the provision of restrooms and drinking water facilities for pourakarmikas working within the jurisdiction of urban local bodies in the district, including the City Corporation.

The directive was given during a progress review meeting of Safai Karamcharis held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office hall on July 10.

The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the need for pourakarmikas employed by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and other urban local bodies, such as municipalities and town panchayats, to have access to facilities where they can change uniforms, have meals, take breaks, and most importantly, obtain drinking water. He asked the officials to arrange high-quality water bottle pouches for the sanitation workers to carry with them while working.

Regarding the recruitment of pourakarmikas, it was informed by Abid Gadyal, the project director of the district urban development cell, that a total of 336 applications had been received for 371 available positions, out of which 207 applicants were successfully recruited. The remaining applications were rejected due to various reasons, which the Deputy Commissioner instructed the officials to investigate and submit a report on.

During the meeting, concerns were raised by Dalit leaders about encroachments on land reserved for Dalits. Responding to this issue, the Deputy Commissioner directed the concerned authorities to take appropriate action, including erecting barricades and putting up boards to prevent encroachment.

The Deputy Commissioner also said that retiring civic workers be presented with a pension check during their farewell ceremony, eliminating the need for them to visit the office for pension-related matters. To facilitate this, officials were instructed to prepare retirement documents three months in advance and submit them to the treasury. The Deputy Commissioner stressed the importance of implementing this practice throughout the district.

Several officials, including Superintendent of Police Dr. Rishyanth, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anand, DCP (Law and Order) Anshu Kumar, Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Anand, Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Department Malathi, and representatives from relevant departments were present at the meeting.

Vishwanath Bantwal, the district in-charge and member of the district awareness and monitoring committee, also participated in the discussions.
