Manipal hosts Global Cancer Consortium Conference

The second international conference of the Global Cancer Consortium was inaugurated today.
The conference with the theme ‘Futuristic Oncology- Precision medicine in breast, liver, and lung cancer’ focuses on treatment advancements in breast, lung, and liver cancer.
It is jointly organized by Kasturba Medical College Manipal, Global Cancer Consortium, and Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre at Fortune Inn Valley View, Manipal on Jan 7 and 8.
More than 200 delegates and faculty members mainly from various oncology disciplines across India participated. The international faculty from Markey Cancer Centre, Mayo Clinic, Lahey Hospital & Medical Centre, and the University of Alabama participated as resource persons.
Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar, Director, National Cancer Institute, Government of India, and Director, the Institute of Rotary Cancer Hospital, All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi inaugurated the conference.
“We have to see all patients differently according to their conditions and symptoms. Only then it will be possible to treat and provide precision treatment,” Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar said.
Dr. Vivek Rangnekar, Professor, Associate Director of Transdisciplinary Collaboration, Markey Cancer Center, University of Kentucky, USA who was the guest of honor gave an overview of the Global Cancer Consortium and its activities and the importance of organizing the international conference of Global Cancer Consortium.
Dr. Sharath K Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Health sciences, MAHE, Manipal was the guest of honor.
Dr. H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, MAHE presided.
“We have all verticals of Cancer treatment under a single roof in Manipal comprehensive Care cancer center, like medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiotherapy and oncology, pediatric hematology-oncology, palliative care medicine, and nuclear medicine. We are in process of building new hospice center care so that everything will be available under one roof. Every year we are organizing the Manipal marathon with a different theme. This year’s theme is pediatric oncology to give awareness on childhood cancer,” he said.
Dr. Karthik Udupa, Head, Medical Oncology, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, and Conference Chairperson gave an overview of the conference. Dr. Ananth Pai, organizing secretary, and Dr. Shirley Lewis, scientific chairperson were present during the inaugural function. Dr. Krthika Rao compered the program.
Dr. Padmaraj Hegde, Dean, KMC Manipal welcomed the gathering, and Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal proposed the vote of thanks.
