Karwar, Aug 26, 2022: A Solid Waste Management Unit has been constructed at Kulave gram panchayat in Sirsi taluk of the district under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
The unit has been constructed at a cost of Rs 12 lakh in 20121-22 at Kageri village and 455 man-days have been created.
The waste management system, which was limited to town panchayats, has now been implemented in rural areas as well and solid waste disposal units have come up under the project in every gram panchayat of the district.
Kulave gram panchayat consists of 6 villages. The garbage management in the village has not only ensured cleanliness but has also employed some of the local villagers.
Gram panchayat development officer Saroja Nayak said that the gram panchayat has appointed vehicles for garbage collection and laborers for garbage segregation in gram panchayats.
Ullas Raikar, a villager is happy about the initiative.
“People used to burn or simply throw away the garbage. Now the garbage cart comes to the doorsteps and collects garbage from the houses. This has greatly facilitated the cleanliness of rural areas,” he said.
