Environmental Awakening: SSRVM and KSPCB Tackle Plastic Pollution Head-On
Mangaluru, Dec 13, 2023: Sri Sri Ravishankar Vidya Mandir (SSRVM) in Konchadi, Mangaluru, collaborated with the Karnataka Pollution Control Board to organize an impactful awareness program combating plastic pollution across various localities in Mangalore on December 11.
The pervasive use of single-use plastics has triggered severe environmental repercussions on a global scale. Astonishingly, one million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute worldwide, with an annual consumption of up to 5 trillion single-use plastic bags.
Alarming statistics reveal that half of the total plastic produced is intended for single use, contributing significantly to environmental degradation. Plastic waste has become so prevalent in the natural environment that scientists propose it could serve as a geological indicator of the Anthropocene era.
The detrimental effects of single-use plastics extend to severe environmental pollution, causing the obstruction and pollution of rivers and streams, leading to the demise of numerous terrestrial and aquatic species. Furthermore, it poses significant risks to human health, contributing to fatal diseases.
Suresh Mahalingapur, the school’s principal, emphasized the urgent need to refrain from using single-use plastics, citing its devastating impact on the environment, including the choking of streams and the disruption of the state’s scenic beauty. The Pollution Control Board has initiated various campaigns to address waste-related challenges in the state.
The awareness program went beyond traditional methods, incorporating street plays, mimes, dances, and songs. Students and representatives from SSRVM school and the Pollution Control Board actively participated in these creative expressions, making the message resonate across diverse audiences.
The transformative initiative unfolded across key locations, including Central Market, Kadri Park, and Panambur Beach, leaving an indelible mark on the collective consciousness of the community. The event was graced by the presence of Vijaya Hegde, the zonal officer of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB).
