Minimally invasive procedure avoids stitches, ensures rapid recovery

Manipal, April 24, 2025: A 34-year-old man who was unable to walk due to severe back pain and radiating pain in his right leg has successfully undergone endoscopic spine surgery at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.

An MRI scan revealed a large lumbar disc herniation compressing spinal nerve roots, which was identified as the cause of his symptoms. The neurosurgery team, led by Dr. Raghavendra Nayak, Professor and Head, and Dr. Girish Menon, Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, performed a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure to remove the herniated disc material.

The surgery was carried out through a small incision without the need for stitches. The patient experienced immediate relief and was able to walk comfortably the next day. He was discharged soon after in stable condition.

“This technique causes minimal tissue damage, leads to quicker recovery, less post-operative pain, and allows for early discharge,” said Dr. Nayak, highlighting the advantages of endoscopic spine surgery.

Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, commended the surgical team for their efforts. “This successful procedure underscores our commitment to adopting advanced and patient-friendly techniques,” he said.
