TRAI issues alert against fake calls threatening mobile disconnection

New Delhi, April 7, 2025: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has cautioned the public against fraudulent calls and messages from individuals posing as TRAI officials, threatening mobile disconnection over alleged illegal activities and attempting to extort money.
In a statement, TRAI clarified that it does not directly communicate with consumers regarding disconnection of mobile numbers. “TRAI has neither issued any such messages nor authorised any third-party agencies to contact customers for these purposes,” it said.
The authority emphasized that any communication — whether a call, SMS, or notice — claiming to be from TRAI and warning of disconnection should be treated as a fraudulent attempt and ignored.
The power to disconnect a mobile number due to billing issues, KYC lapses, or misuse rests solely with the respective Telecom Service Provider (TSP), not TRAI.
Consumers have been urged to stay vigilant and avoid falling prey to such scams. In case of doubt, they should verify the authenticity of such calls or messages by contacting their service provider’s official call centres.
To combat telecom-related cybercrime and financial fraud, citizens can report suspicious communications through the Chakshu facility on the Sanchar Saathi platform at https://sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc/. Confirmed cybercrime cases should be reported by calling 1930 or visiting https://cybercrime.gov.in.
