Youths Urged to Stay Away from Substance Abuse

Udupi, March 14, 2025: Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr. K. Vidyakumari has called upon the youth to stay away from alcohol and narcotic substances, warning that their consumption adversely affects physical and mental health, leading to life-threatening diseases. She urged young individuals to focus on maintaining good health and a bright future instead of falling into the trap of substance abuse.
Speaking at a seminar on the ill effects of alcohol and drugs at the Government First Grade College and Postgraduate Study Center in Tenkanidiyur, Dr. Vidyakumari emphasized that addiction not only deprives students of education but also ruins their future and social standing. The event was organized by the district administration in collaboration with the Department of Information and Public Relations, the Health and Family Welfare Department, the Karnataka State Temperance Board, and the Youth Red Cross unit of the college.
“Many youths unknowingly get addicted to alcohol or drugs for momentary pleasure but end up destroying their lives. No one should encourage such practices. Youngsters must think about their future and work towards their goals instead of succumbing to harmful influences. Consumption of these substances leads to severe health issues like heart disease and cancer, often resulting in untimely deaths,” she said.
Dr. Vidyakumari also highlighted that the police department is effectively working to control drug abuse in the district, with additional support from education, railway, and postal departments. She urged teachers to closely monitor students and report any suspicious activities to the authorities to prevent addiction among the youth.
District CEO Prateek Boyle, speaking at the event, pointed out that drug addiction not only affects individuals but also their families and society at large. “Substance abuse disrupts mental stability, affects financial conditions, and isolates individuals from society. The youth, who form 60% of the country’s population, should contribute to economic growth rather than fall prey to addiction. Awareness must be created to eradicate substance abuse from society,” he stated.
Dr. Vasudev, a psychiatrist from Ajjarkad District Hospital, delivered a special lecture, describing addiction as a disease influenced by social conditions, family issues, stress, and psychological changes during adolescence. “People fall into addiction due to various reasons, including unemployment and depression. Consumption of alcohol, smoking, ganja, and other drugs severely affects organs like the liver, kidney, and brain. Instead of alienating addicts, efforts should be made to rehabilitate them into responsible citizens,” he said.
He also advised students to limit mobile phone usage and engage in physical activities such as exercise and yoga to enhance mental well-being and stay away from addictions. “Every individual should contribute to building a drug-free society,” he added.
District Family Welfare Officer Dr. K. Rama Rao cautioned students about the devastating effects of addiction to alcohol and drugs, emphasizing that it not only ruins individuals but also their families. Principal of the Tenkanidiyur Government First Grade College and Postgraduate Study Center, Nityananda V. Gangavkar, presided over the event and encouraged students to actively participate in eliminating drug addiction from society while embracing constructive activities.
On this occasion, District Tobacco Control Unit advisor Manjula Shetty administered an oath against substance abuse, while Girish Navada and his team created awareness through a musical performance.
The event saw participation from Indian Red Cross Society Udupi District President Basrur Rajeev Shetty, college faculty members, students, and officials. District Information Officer Manjunath B. delivered the introductory remarks, while Prashant N. from the college’s Red Cross unit coordinated the event and Suchitra proposed the vote of thanks.
