Manipal: Kasturba Hospital Hosts Hands-On Workshop for Endoscopic Surgery
Manipal, September 5, 2023 – The Department of Gastroenterology at Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal, recently hosted a groundbreaking hands-on workshop on Endoscopic Surgery focusing on Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) on September 2nd and 3rd, 2023.
This unique training program and workshop mark a pioneering effort in introducing a novel endoscopic procedure for addressing Achalasia Cardia, a condition characterized by difficulty in swallowing food due to an esophageal disorder.
The procedure, known as Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy, offers an incision-less, scarless alternative for patients. Remarkably, patients undergoing this procedure can be discharged within just 48 hours, provided there are no complications.

Doctors from various regions, including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru and Shivamogga, participated in this workshop to acquire expertise in these advanced techniques.
The resource persons were – Dr. Rajvenugopal from Bengaluru, Dr. Prakash Zakaria from Kochi. Dr Shiran Shetty, and Dr. Ganesh Bhat both from Kasturba Hospital Manipal.
Dr. Shiran Shetty, the Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and a Professor, highlighted that Kasturba Hospital boasts state-of-the-art technology and equipment that align with international standards.
