Mangaluru, Aug 20, 2023: The legacy of former Chief Minister Devaraj Urs, a champion of social justice and empowerment, was commemorated today during the 108th birth anniversary celebrations held at Netravathi Auditorium of Zilla Panchayat.

Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP, along with other dignitaries, paid tribute to Urs’s contributions in advancing the underprivileged sections of society through the Land Reforms Act and other transformative measures.

In an event organized by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, and Backward Classes Welfare Department, Mullai Muhilan highlighted Urs’s pivotal role in allocating land for cultivation to marginalized communities, including Dalits and backward classes. This visionary step empowered these communities economically, socially, and politically, leaving an indelible mark on Karnataka’s history.

The DC emphasized the changes ushered in by Urs’s tenure, which have enabled backward classes to stride forward in various domains, notably education.

“Devaraj Urs’s vision has propelled Karnataka to become a modern and economically progressive state. The establishment of schools and hostels in rural areas, catering to students from backward classes, were concrete outcomes of Urs’s ideologies,” he said.

Attributing a significant transformation to the Land Reforms Act, the DC emphasized that this legislation granted ownership of land to the impoverished. The legislation not only provided land but also fostered an environment where individuals could shape their destinies, ultimately leading to societal progress and improved living standards.

Speaking at the event, resource person Annayya Kulal underscored Urs’s role as a voice for the marginalized and voiceless communities.

Kulal praised Urs’s attentiveness to people’s grievances and his dedication to addressing them.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anandh K, Additional DC Dr. Santhosh Kumar, were present.

As part of the commemoration, Mullai Muhilan led attendees in taking the pledge of Sadbhavana Diwas.

In recognition of academic excellence, students residing in backward classes hostels and achieving high marks in SSLC and PUC examinations were honored. Students from medical and engineering hostels were also felicitated for their outstanding performance.

Winners of various competitions, including sports, were awarded prizes.
