Manipal, June 19, 2023: The Department of Pharmacy Practice at Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, joined hands with the Global Cancer Consortium to organize an informative lecture and workshop on cancer research.

The event was held on June 16 as part of the Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Lecture Series.

Esteemed scientist Professor Dr. Sooryanarayana Varambally was the resource person. Dr. Varambally holds prestigious positions, including Scientist (C) at the Informatics Institute and O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Senior Scientist (C) at the Nephrology Research & Training Center, and Director of Pathology at the Joint Academic Departments at UAB.

Dr. Varambally is engaged in research pertaining to the elucidation of the molecular basis of cancer through an integrative genomic, epigenetic, and proteomic approach. He gave an insightful lecture on the topic “Evolution and Future of OMICS in Cancer.” He spoke about cancer pathogenesis, the role of various biomarkers and technologies in cancer, and the potential opportunities for mining big data from various databases such as UALCAN.

The program saw a participation of over 90 individuals, including faculty members, PhD scholars, and postgraduate students from various institutes affiliated with Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

Following the lecture, a hands-on workshop named “Mining of Big Data in Cancer OMICS” took place, focusing on the practical use of the UALCAN Database. Around 70 participants actively engaged in this interactive workshop.

Dr. Surulivel Rajan M, Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, greeted the attendees, Dr. Mahadev Rao delivered the vote of thanks.
