BJP fields new faces in DK and Udupi for upcoming elections
Udupi, April 11, 2023: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made significant changes in its candidate list for the upcoming assembly elections in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The party’s first list includes all constituencies in the region, except for Byndoor in Udupi district.

In a surprising move, the BJP has decided not to field S Angara, a six-time MLA and sitting minister. Instead, the party has fielded Bhagirathi, a former Zilla Panchayat member, from Sullia. Similarly, former ZP president Asha Timmappa Gowda will replace sitting MLA Sanjeev Matandoor. Meanwhile, Sathish Kumpala, another former member of the Zilla Panchayat, will contest against UT Khader in the Mangalore constituency.
The party has retained its other sitting MLAs, including Umanath Kotian from Mudbidri, Y Bharath Shetty from Mangalore North, Vedavyas Kamath from Mangalore South, Rajesh Naik from Bantwal, and Harish Poonja from Belthangady, who will contest from their respective constituencies.
However, the biggest surprise came in Udupi, where the party has denied a ticket to sitting MLA and senior BJP leader Raghupathi Bhat. Yashpal Suvarna has been fielded from Udupi instead. In Kapu, the party has decided to field Gurme Suresh Shetty, while Kiran Kumar Kodgi will replace Halady Srinivas Shetty in Kundapur, who had earlier declined to contest.
The party’s candidate from Karkala will continue to be Minister Sunil Kumar.
These changes in the BJP’s candidate list reflect the party’s strategy to bring in fresh faces and maintain a balance between experienced leaders and new talent.
