New pit line facility inaugurated at Mangaluru Central
Mangaluru, Sept 14, 2022: B. G. Mallya, General Manager, Southern Railway inaugurated the New pit line at Coaching Depot in Mangaluru Central railway station today. The General Manager also reviewed the ongoing construction work of the new Platforms No. 4 & 5 and inspected the Carriage and Wagon depot at Mangaluru Central.
Desh Ratan Gupta, Principal Chief Engineer, Gautam Dutta, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, Trilok Kothari, Divisional Railway Manager, Palakkad, and branch officers were present during the inauguration and inspection.
The new pit Line is constructed at a cost of Rs. 6.76 Crore. It can hold 24 coaches and replaces the existing 18-coach pit line to facilitate the construction of new platforms (No.4 and 5) as per the development plan of Mangaluru Central Railway Station. It will facilitate routine maintenance and inspection of coaches including Coach cleaning, Coach charging, watering, etc. during day/night.
The catwalks for 546 meters on either side will provide easy access to each coach of the rake. This facility helps in easy maintenance and cleaning of the carriage.
Maintenance of Coaches
Pit lines are the major infrastructure required for conducting Primary Maintenance of passenger coaches. After every scheduled trip, under-gear examination, checking of braking system, electrical maintenance, cleaning, washing of both exterior and interior, checking the amenity fittings, watering of the coaches, etc are being carried out at the pit lines.
After the maintenance at the Pit line, coaches will be made fit for 96 hours (4 days) run from the Carriage depot.
In addition to the trip attention, monthly schedules and tri-monthly schedules of coaches are carried out in the pit lines. Draining out the water tanks and Maintenance of Bio toilets are also carried out at the pit line at regular intervals.
All the maintenance activities are done according to the guidelines given in the coach maintenance manual issued by the railway board.
