Karwar, Jan 17, 2021: Uttara Kannada district which shares a border with Goa has set up special teams at the checkposts to track every vehicle carrying poultry birds into the district.

This precautionary measure is taken in the backdrop of bird flu reports in some parts of the country.

Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner Dr. Harish Kumar who held a meeting with the officials to discuss preparedness in the district today asked the people not to panic as all precautionary measures are taken in the district.

Animal Husbandry department Deputy Director Dr. Nandakumar Pai said that teams posted at Majali and Anamoda checkpost are keeping a strict vigil on every vehicle transporting pultry birds into the district and also recording a detailed travel history.

He said that 21 quick action teams are formed and provided the necessary training to take necessary action in case bird flu is found in the district. Each team is led by a veterinary doctor. The district has 141 chicken farms and each one has about 300-500 birds.

Explaining the precautionary measures to be taken by the common man, Dr. Deepak said that the virus of bird flu dies if the chicken is cooked at 70 degrees for three seconds.

“People can consume chicken by cooking it properly,” he added.

He also asked people to report any unnatural death of more than 6 birds.
Additional DC Krishnamurthy, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. Sharath Nayak, Dr. Vinod Bhute, and others were present.
