Karwar, Aug. 27, 2025: The Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada district has declared a holiday for schools and PU colleges in ten taluks on August 28, 2025, in view of the red alert warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the forecast of heavy rainfall.

According to the order, Anganwadis, primary and high schools, and pre-university colleges in Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Joida, and Dandeli taluks will remain closed on Thursday to ensure the safety of children.

The decision was taken based on requests from local tahsildars and official communications from the Department of Women and Child Development and the Department of Public Instruction in Karwar and Sirsi. The Deputy Commissioner invoked powers under Section 34(M) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005 to issue the directive.

The order stated that the departments concerned must strictly implement the holiday and make necessary adjustments to compensate for the lost academic time in the coming days.

The DC, who also chairs the District Disaster Management Authority, emphasized that the measure was taken purely in the interest of student safety, given the possibility of disruption and accidents due to heavy rains.
