Registration of Pet Shops Mandatory: DC

Mangaluru, June 24, 2025: In a move aimed at preventing animal cruelty and regulating pet shops, Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. has directed that all pet shops operating in Dakshina Kannada district must mandatorily register with the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
He was speaking at the district-level meeting of the Dakshina Kannada District Animal Welfare Society, held at the DC’s office on Tuesday. The DC emphasized that pet shop owners who fail to register within the stipulated deadline will face legal action. “Animal protection is a crucial responsibility, and any instances of cruelty against animals must be dealt with strictly,” he said.
The meeting also discussed the establishment of a ‘Prani Mitra’ animal hospital in Bondanthila village of Mangaluru taluk to cater to abandoned and injured animals. Concerns were raised over the decomposing carcasses of animals killed in road accidents or other causes, with no proper system in place for disposal. The need for an animal crematorium in the district was highlighted.
Arun Kumar Shetty, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, said awareness programs are being conducted to educate the public and school students about humane treatment of animals. He added that the department is collaborating with state and district-level agencies to implement animal welfare laws through the Animal Welfare Board of India.
Superintendent of Police Dr. Arun K, ACP Geetha Kulkarni, Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner Ravichandra Nayak, and committee member Suma R Nayak were among those present at the meeting.
