Uttara Kannada Officials Gear Up for Monsoon Preparedness
Karwar, May 24: Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti has urged district and taluk level officials to closely collaborate and ensure seamless preparations as the impending monsoon rains approach.
Addressing the Disaster Management Authority meeting at the Court Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Kavalikatti held detailed discussions with various department officials, outlining the necessary steps to be taken for pre-monsoon preparedness in the district for the year 2023.
One of the key directives issued by the DC pertained to the urgent cleaning of storm water drains falling under municipal, nagar sabha, and gram panchayat limits in each taluk. This proactive measure aims to facilitate the smooth flow of rainwater during the monsoon season. Warning against any delays, he stressed that officials failing to adhere to the two-day deadline for drain cleaning would face consequences.
Acknowledging the potential risks posed by trees along the roads during heavy rains, Kavalikatti urged the forest department to promptly address tree clearance to prevent accidents. Additionally, he highlighted the common issue of water contamination during the rainy season and called on relevant authorities to take immediate action to ensure the uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water.
To mitigate water stagnation on roads, the DC urged repairs and proper maintenance of canals and drains alongside roadways. As excessive rainfall is expected to fill all dams in the district, Kavalikatti advised concerned officials to maintain constant communication with the district administration. This ongoing coordination will allow them to monitor dam water levels and respond effectively to flood conditions.
Preparedness for potential flood situations was also emphasized, with instructions for storage of necessary boats, maintenance of life-saving equipment, and the establishment of emergency shelters. Kavalikatti urged authorities to address the dangers associated with fishing during the monsoon season, including illegal fishing activities, restrictions on low-power engine boats, and ensuring the safety of fishermen.
In line with disaster management efforts, Kavalikatti called for the formation of teams in gram panchayats and emphasized the utilization of local boats where necessary. He instructed the officials to open ‘Kalaji Kendra,’ (Care centers) with essential amenities in every gram panchayat. Officials were reminded of their duty to man the 24×7 control rooms.
The meeting was attended by Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Ishwar Kumar Kandu, Additional Deputy Commissioner Raju Mogaveera, DFO Prashanth, Additional SP Jayaraj, Sirsi Sub-Divisional Officer Devaraj, Bhatkal Sub-Divisional Officer Mamta, Kumta Sub-Divisional Officer Raghavendra Jagalasar, along with district and taluk level officers, Navy officials, Coast Guard officials, and Kaiga officials.
