The order was issued on Friday by the Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority based on weather forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Bengaluru.
The administration said rainfall has been continuing across Dakshina Kannada, and with forecasts indicating that the prevailing weather conditions are likely to persist, precautionary measures have been put in place to safeguard the public.
The holiday applies to all Anganwadi centres, government, aided and private schools, including residential schools, pre-university colleges for students up to Class 12, including residential PU colleges, and all ITI and diploma colleges, including residential institutions.
The district administration warned that any institution violating the order would face legal action under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
District- and taluk-level officers have been directed to remain at their headquarters, ensure uninterrupted disaster management operations, respond promptly to public grievances and maintain constant contact with the District Collectorate’s control room.
Tourists and the general public have also been advised not to visit riverbanks or beaches. Officials of the concerned departments have been instructed to keep relief and care centres ready in every taluk to respond to any emergency.
The district administration has appealed to the public to remain alert and cooperate with authorities during the adverse weather conditions. People facing rain- or disaster-related emergencies may contact the district control room on the toll-free helpline 1077 or 0824-2442590.
