District Skill Development Mission reviews industry demand, training needs in DK

Plan focuses on meeting emerging industry needs, improving training quality and expanding opportunities for local talent

• New training areas include electric vehicles and hotel management.
• Accommodation for apprentices undergoing training at Baikampady discussed.

Mangaluru, Sept. 26, 2026: The meeting of the District Skill Development Mission District Committee was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here under the chairmanship of Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V.

As per the government’s directions for preparing the Dakshina Kannada District Skill Development Plan, nodal officer Harish C.P. presented the report through a presentation at the meeting.

The report was prepared by consolidating information collected from secondary schools, pre-university and degree colleges, ITIs, diploma and engineering colleges, industries in the district and various government departments. The committee was presented with information on the supply and demand related to skill development in the district.

The meeting discussed the measures required to address the demand for new skills in industries in the district, along with the supply of such skills and the quality of training programmes.

The committee also discussed the supply and demand requirements in the information technology and medical sectors.

The meeting considered the need to provide accommodation for students coming from different parts of the district to Baikampady for apprenticeship training, particularly those who are unable to travel to and from the training centre every day.

Training programmes in areas such as electric vehicles and hotel management have also been included under the training categories. The meeting further discussed including available skills under women’s skill development programmes.

Several private skill development centres are operating in the district and the meeting noted the need to map these centres.

As a large number of migrant workers from other districts are working in the district, there is also a need to identify and provide recognition to local talent, Harish C.P. said.

He said collecting and monitoring data was a challenging task and that considerable attention had been given to consolidating the data and preparing the report.

Following discussions, the District Skill Development Plan (DSDP) was finalised.

Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. reviewed the various schemes implemented by the Skill Development Department and instructed officials to take steps to improve their progress.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Raju K., Zilla Panchayat Deputy Secretary Jayalakshmi Rayakod, Zilla Panchayat Planning Director Jayaram, District Skill Development Officer Pradeep D’Souza, Canara Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Abdul Mudasar, Canara Industries Association president M.D. Poojari, District Small Industries Association president Kusuma, KDEM representative Vaishak Pai, District Labour Officer and officials from various departments were present at the meeting.
