Mangaluru, Aug 4, 2025: A new development project worth ₹75 lakh has been planned to provide improved infrastructure at the Nehru Maidan Football Ground in Mangaluru, MLA of Mangaluru South, D Vedavyas Kamath, announced on Monday.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 27th Independence Cup inter-school and college-level football tournament at Karavali Utsav Grounds, Kamath said that the turf installation at the Nehru Maidan has already been completed under the Smart City project and will soon be made available for athletes.

“The long-cherished dream of Mangaluru’s football enthusiasts — a turf court with international-level facilities — is now a reality. We have also discussed with the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports to provide additional amenities such as a pavilion and toilets. Funds have been assured for this,” he stated.

The inauguration event saw the participation of dignitaries including DCC Bank Managing Director Gopinath and NRI entrepreneur Zakariya Bajpe. Smart City General Manager Arun Prabha, Sports Officer Pradeep D’Souza, District Information Officer B.A. Khader Shah, former corporator Abdul Latif, veteran footballer Lakshman Bengre, and members of the Football Association were also present.

Dakshina Kannada District Football Association President D.M. Aslam welcomed the gathering.

The Independence Cup football tournament, which kicked off today, will be held across three venues — Karavali Utsav Grounds, Falnir FC Grounds, and Yenepoya University Grounds in Deralakatte — and will continue until August 15.
