Karwar, July 22, 2025: In light of the Orange Alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department and continuous heavy rainfall, the Uttara Kannada District Administration has declared a holiday for primary, high schools, and Anganwadi centres in five taluks—Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, and Bhatkal—on July 23, 2025.

Citing safety concerns for children, the decision was taken by the Deputy Commissioner under Section 34(M) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. The move follows oral requests from the respective Tahsildars and a formal communication from the Department of Women and Child Development.

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in the district between July 22 and July 23. Taking preventive measures against any untoward incidents, the holiday aims to safeguard the well-being of children attending educational institutions and Anganwadi centres.

The Deputy Commissioner has directed officials of the Women and Child Development Department and the Department of Public Instruction in Karwar to implement the order strictly. The departments have also been instructed to compensate for the academic loss by adjusting the school calendar in the coming days.
