The survey aims to provide crucial data to support the classification and internal reservation process for SCs in Karnataka

Udupi, April 25, 2025: Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr. K. Vidyakumari has instructed officials to effectively carry out the upcoming survey of Scheduled Caste (SC) families in the district, underlining its importance in the context of internal reservation.

Presiding over the District Coordination Committee meeting at the Rajatadri DC office in Manipal, Dr. Vidyakumari noted that the one-man commission headed by retired High Court Judge H.N. Nagamohan Das has initiated this state-wide data collection drive to understand various aspects concerning the SC population. The survey aims to provide crucial data to support the classification and internal reservation process for SCs in Karnataka.

The DC informed that the survey will begin on May 5 and be conducted in three phases. School teachers will serve as enumerators, going door-to-door to collect data, and she appealed to the public to cooperate fully with them.

At the taluk level, coordination committees have been formed under the leadership of Assistant Commissioners. Tahsildars, Executive Officers of Taluk Panchayats, and other taluk-level officials will serve as members. To oversee the survey operations, Block Education Officers and headmasters will be appointed, with directives issued by the Department of School Education and Literacy.

At the gram panchayat level, Panchayat Development Officers and Taluk Nodal Officers will be responsible for ensuring smooth supervision and coordination of the survey process.

As per the household data, the number of families in rural and urban areas will be listed and provided to each taluk through password/login access, categorized by gram panchayat, village, and ward. Accordingly, teachers will be mapped through HRMS to carry out the survey work.

The district has an SC population of over 75,000, and approximately 1,000 to 1,100 enumerators will be required to conduct the survey. Teachers from the education department will be deployed for this task. Training for district-level master trainers is scheduled for April 28 at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee auditorium, and all designated personnel have been directed to attend without fail.

Dr. Vidyakumari also emphasized the need for all departments to coordinate as per government-issued guidelines to ensure the successful execution of the survey.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Abid Gadyal, Zilla Panchayat Deputy Secretary Srinivas Rao, Assistant Commissioner Rashmi, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Narayanaswamy, DIET Vice Principal Dr. Ashok Kamath, and other district officials were present at the meeting.
