Mangaluru, April 25, 2025: Arrangements had been made at the Pilikula Regional Science Centre to observe the Zero Shadow Day phenomenon on April 24, 2025. The event included demonstrations and explanations to help visitors understand the rare astronomical occurrence when the sun is directly overhead and objects cast no shadow.

Many visitors attended the programme and clarified their doubts after viewing the demonstrations. However, due to cloudy skies at the time of the phenomenon, it was not possible to experience the zero-shadow effect firsthand.

Visitors were instead given the opportunity to observe solar activity through telescopes equipped with solar filters.

In coordination with Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium (Bengaluru), Periyar Science and Technology Museum (Chennai), and other institutions, practical demonstrations were also conducted to calculate Earth’s circumference, its rotational speed, and to determine the true north direction.

Scientific Officer Vignesh provided details about the event, and the centre’s staff assisted in organizing the demonstrations.
