Mangaluru: Madivala Machideva Jayanthi Celebrated

Mangaluru, Feb 02, 2025: The Madivala Machideva Jayanthi was observed at Tulu Bhavan on Saturday under the joint aegis of the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Kannada and Culture Department, and with the cooperation of Dakshina Kannada Madivala Sangha.
Mayor Manoj Kumar inaugurated the event and highlighted Machideva’s contributions to social justice. He noted that Machideva was a revolutionary figure who fought against caste discrimination, gender inequality, and social oppression. “His immense contributions toward eradicating social evils remain relevant even today,” he said.
Delivering the keynote address, Canara PU College lecturer Raghu Idkidu emphasized that Madivala Machayya was not merely known for his lineage but for his transformative contributions to society. “He dedicated his life to social reform and laid the foundation for an equitable society. His vachanas impart essential lessons on social progress and human values,” he remarked.
He further noted that Machideva championed dignity in all professions, as reflected in his words, ‘Arasutana melalla, Agasatana keellalla’ (Kingship is not superior, and being a washerman is not inferior). “His unwavering commitment to preserving vachanas despite adversities underscores his significant role in safeguarding Sharana traditions. By embracing human values and distancing ourselves from superstitions, we can contribute to building a better society,” he added.
Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy president Taranath Gatti, who presided over the function, hailed Machideva as a fearless reformer. “He played a crucial role in protecting vachanas during challenging times. His teachings and ideals should be integrated into our lives,” he said.
Madivala Sangha president Prakash B.N. was present. Kannada and Culture Department Assistant Director Rajesh G. welcomed the gathering, while Varuni Nagaraj compered the program.
