For illegal possession of banned plastics, fines are as follows:
- Up to 1 kg: ₹500 for the first offense, ₹1,000 for the second offense
- 1 to 10 kg: ₹2,000 for the first offense, ₹5,000 for the second offense
- 10 to 50 kg: ₹5,000 for the first offense, ₹10,000 for the second offense
- 50 to 100 kg: ₹10,000 for the first offense, ₹20,000 for the second offense
- Over 100 kg: ₹40,000 for the first offense, ₹50,000 for the second offense
Continued violations will lead to the revocation of business licenses and further legal measures.
Despite multiple raids on hotels, grocery stores, and fast-food outlets by the municipality, instances of plastic bags labeled as “biodegradable” have been observed. The municipality has clarified that such biodegradable plastics are also banned. Any use, sale, or production of these materials will incur the same penalties and regulations as non-biodegradable plastics, according to a release from the municipal commissioner’s office.
