Ujire, August 12: Despite the limited resources and literacy of the past, people lived contentedly by sharing their joys and sorrows, utilizing locally available food items. In contrast, today’s society is increasingly driven by competition, comparison, and envy, observed Dr. Yogish Kairodi, Head of the Kannada Department at Alva’s College, Moodbidri.

Speaking at the ‘Tuluvera Aati’ event organized by the History Department and Tulu Sangha at SDM College, Ujire, Dr. Kairodi emphasized that our ancestors, though unlettered, should not be considered ignorant. “During the tough Aati month, when food scarcity was a reality, they innovated with food resources. However, in today’s educated world, people are more disconnected, chasing money and often harboring negative feelings towards one another,” he said.

Dr. Kairodi lamented that while poisonous creatures can be countered with medicine, there is no substitute for food. “Unfortunately, food itself has become toxic, and children no longer value it. We are lost in a world of entertainment.”

He reflected on the past, noting that there were no mass media for entertainment, especially during the rainy Aati month when people couldn’t leave their homes due to heavy rains and widespread illnesses. “The Aati Kalenja, revered as a manifestation of Lord Shiva, symbolized courage. The simple yet meaningful attire of the Aati Kalenja was believed to ward off diseases and evil spirits,” he explained.

The college principal, Dr. B.A. Kumar Hegde, who presided over the event, remarked that for the modern generation, the Aati month has become a time of luxury, with malls and hotels becoming a part of daily life. “For our elders, Aati was a month of hardship, often lacking even basic financial resources. Events like this are essential to educate the younger generation about these realities,” he said.

The event featured a special performance by the Aati Kalenja troupe from Koyyoor’s Ammi Nalike, along with an exhibition of ancient artifacts representing Tulu culture.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions held as part of the event. The program was attended by Durga Prasanna and Mansa, representatives of the History Department’s student union.

Dr. Sanmati Kumar, Head of the History Department, welcomed the gathering. Lecturer Abhignya Upadhyay delivered the vote of thanks, and students Shraddha and Srishti anchored the event. The program concluded with a cultural performance.
