Addiction-Free Day Observed in Mangaluru
Mangaluru, Aug02, 2024: The increasing prevalence of drug addiction among students is a concerning trend that demands urgent action, said Mamatha Gatti, President of the Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation (KCDC), on Thursday.
Addressing a gathering at the ‘Addiction-Free Day’ event, Gatti emphasized the critical need to combat the rise of substance abuse that is jeopardizing the future of the younger generation.
The event, held at Wenlock District Hospital, was jointly organized by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, the Karnataka State Temperance Board, the Department of Information and Public Relations, and the Link De-addiction Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center. The occasion marked the birth anniversary of Dr. Mahanta Shivayogi, a day observed as ‘Addiction-Free Day’ in honor of his efforts against harmful habits.
Gatti highlighted the dangers of drug addiction, stating, “Substance abuse prevents students from building a bright future. It is essential for them to adopt only positive habits to ensure a successful life. The decision to celebrate Dr. Mahanta Shivayogi’s birthday as Addiction-Free Day is commendable.”
Rising Concern Over Mobile Phone Addiction
District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. H.R. Thimmaiah raised concerns about the increasing addiction to mobile phones, especially among children.
“Addiction is defined by the inability to quit a habit, and continuous mobile phone usage falls into this category. Parents are inadvertently contributing to this problem by using mobile devices as tools to pacify their children, which is distancing them from other developmental activities. This poses a significant threat to the mental and physical well-being of children,” he warned.
The program also featured remarks from Sadashiva Ullal, President of the Mangaluru Urban Development Authority, and Lidia Lobo, Link Administrative Officer. District Mental Health Program Officer Dr. Sudarshan administered an anti-addiction oath, and psychiatrist Dr. Prajakta, along with Dr. Aruna Ediyal from Father Muller Hospital, offered expert insights.
As part of the event, prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions organized for school and college students by the Health and Family Welfare Department and Link.
Senior Assistant Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations, B.A. Khader Shah, welcomed the attendees, while District Health Education Officer Jyothi Ulepadi extended the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Ruchitha.
