Udupi DC Advocates Eco-Friendly Diwali Celebrations with Green Crackers
Dr. K Vidya Kumari Stresses on Pollution Control and Safe Firework Usage
Udupi, Nov 07, 2023: Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr. K Vidya Kumari has called upon the public to observe Diwali, the festival of lights, by opting for eco-friendly green crackers in an effort to mitigate pollution levels.
Speaking about the sale and regulation of firecrackers within the district, Dr. Kumari emphasized that only green crackers would be permitted this year. These designated eco-friendly firecrackers can be identified by a distinctive green cracker emblem on both the individual crackers and their packaging, and they must also feature a QR code.
She highlighted that the Supreme Court has mandated the use of only green crackers during Diwali, which is slated to be celebrated from November 12 to 15. She emphasized the need for careful and considerate use of green crackers during the festivities, ensuring they do not disturb animals, birds, children, or the elderly. Additionally, she urged that no fireworks be ignited in the vicinity of hospitals, educational institutions, or restricted areas.
Tahsildars, circle inspectors, and local body officials are instructed to conduct thorough inspections of all firecracker vendors’ warehouses within their respective jurisdictions. If any unauthorized firecrackers, other than the approved green ones, are found, the entire inventory should be confiscated and appropriate legal measures should be taken against the responsible parties.
Temporary firecracker shop owners are urged to take necessary precautionary measures when setting up their stalls, strictly adhering to the conditions specified in their permission grants.
To raise awareness, effective outreach programs are to be conducted. Pamphlets and posters are being distributed in places like railway stations, bus stands, malls, and public transportation hubs.
Anticipating potential unauthorized transportation of prohibited firecrackers from outside the state, officials will carry out thorough inspections at all border check posts in the district until the conclusion of the Diwali festivities, promptly seizing any banned items.
Local governing bodies have been directed to take proactive measures for the proper disposal of solid waste generated during the Diwali celebrations, ensuring it adheres to established scientific protocols.
