Manipal, September 17, 2023: Dr. Ranjan R Pai, Chairman of Manipal Education and Medical Group, inaugurated the Bone Bank today at Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, MAHE Manipal.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Manipal Foundation, was attended by guests including Harinarayan Sharma, CEO of Manipal Foundation, Lt Gen (Dr) M D Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor MAHE Manipal, and Dr. Sharath Kumar Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences), MAHE, Manipal.

Dr. H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, MAHE, Manipal, presided over the program, extending his congratulations and best wishes for the success of the Bone Bank.

Dr. Harinarayan Sharma emphasized the significance of Manipal’s Bone Bank, marking it as the first of its kind within the network of Manipal hospitals, especially in northern coastal Karnataka. Dr. M D Venkatesh highlighted the cost-effectiveness and superior quality of bone bank allografts compared to commercially available alternatives, despite the expenses incurred in processing and radiation-sterilization of the donor bone.

In his address, Dr. H S Ballal underscored Manipal’s ongoing commitment to introducing cutting-edge facilities and technologies. He emphasized the critical importance of a bone bank in contemporary medical practice. Dr. Sharath K. Rao congratulated the dedicated team behind the establishment of the Bone Bank, affirming that advanced facilities once exclusive to major cities are now accessible in Manipal.

Dr. Monappa Naik Aroor, Professor of Orthopaedics and Convener of Bone Bank, provided a comprehensive overview of the vital role played by massive bone grafts in addressing complex orthopedic challenges. Allografts, sourced from both living and deceased voluntary donors, undergo rigorous processing to ensure safety and infection-free usage. Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, said that once the necessary licensing is secured, the products will be made available for therapeutic use.

The event was attended by Shruthi R Pai, Dr. Giridhar Kini, Registrar, MAHE Manipal, Sr. CG Muthana, COO, MAHE Manipal, Dr. Anand Venugopal, COO, Teaching Hospital, MAHE Manipal, along with all Associate Deans, and Dr. Shyamasunder Bhat N, Professor and Head Department of Orthopaedics were present.
