Nalin Kumar Kateel Advocates Language Proficiency for Bank Staff
Mangaluru, Aug 20, 2023: Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel emphasized the importance of language proficiency among bank officers and staff in rural areas, specifically highlighting the need for familiarity with Kannada and Tulu languages.
He conveyed his thoughts during the district-level progress review committee meeting, hosted by the lead bank at the Netravathi auditorium of the zilla panchayat on Saturday.
Nalin urged authorities to address obstacles within nationalized banks and reiterated the necessity for rural banks to have staff proficient in Kannada and Tulu languages. This step is crucial to prevent rural residents from being compelled to resort to cooperative banks. He recommended the appointment of individuals familiar with the local language at the very least.
Addressing the gathering, Kateel directed officials to take swift action with the objective of extending credit facilities to a minimum of 50 individuals through each branch. This directive aligns with the goals set for the district under the PM-SVANidhi (Prime Minister’s Street Vendors Atmanirbhar Nidhi) scheme.
The district accommodates a total of 633 bank branches across various banks, each assigned the task of providing loans to 50 individuals. Kateel emphasized that loan applications should not be dismissed under any pretext.
Notably, Dakshina Kannada district held the top rank in the Jan Dhan Yojana within the state. With the Mudra scheme’s implementation, banks disbursed a staggering Rs 3,500 crore to 2 lakh account holders in a single year, earning commendation from the central government. Kateel urged for the selection of maximum beneficiaries for both the PM SVANidhi and the recently announced Vishwakarma Yojana, aiming for Dakshina Kannada district to lead the nation.
Marking an upcoming event, Kateel revealed plans for a loan mela scheduled in the first week of October. This event will bring together beneficiaries of various central government loan schemes in Mangaluru, with an invitation extended to the Union Finance Minister.
Nalin stressed the need for all banks to surpass their loan scheme targets by then and advised streamlining loan disbursal procedures during the mela.
Turning attention to currency circulation, the MP highlighted the Rs 10 coin currently in use. He noted that despite its availability, people and businesses often refrain from using the coin, resulting in its accumulation within banks. He stressed the importance of generating awareness among the public and traders regarding the practicality of using the Rs 10 coin in day-to-day transactions.
