Embarking on a Sacred Journey: Puthige Paryaya Kattige Muhurtha Held in Udupi
A Traditional Prelude to Puthige Paryaya, Ensuring Abundant Food for Devotees
Udupi, June 26, 2023 :The temple town of Udupi was awash with spiritual fervor as the sacred ceremony of Kattige Muhurtha unfolded today at the Sri Puthige Matha.
This significant ritual marks the commencement of the meticulous preparation for the upcoming Puthige Paryaya, scheduled to take place on January 18, 2024. A crucial step in this elaborate process, the Kattige Muhurtha ritual symbolizes the collection and storage of firewood, an essential element for the upcoming mass feeding during the two-year Paryaya term.

Kattige Muhurtha represents the third out of the four preliminary ceremonies conducted before the grand Paryaya celebration, a two-year term of divine service.
The Paryaya tradition, steeped in deep-rooted customs, places immense importance on these four Muhurthas. Each Muhurtha carries its own symbolic significance, paving the way for the elaborate “Anna Daana” or mass feeding during the tenure of the Paryaya.

Baale Muhurtha ensures an abundant supply of plantain leaves, while Akki Muhurtha marks the collection and storage of rice. Kattige Muhurtha takes center stage, heralding the gathering of firewood for the sacred chariot-shaped structure. Finally, Batta Muhurtha signifies the meticulous preparations for the forthcoming season.
Under the benevolent guidance of Sri Sugunendra Teertha Sripadaru and Sri Susrindra Tirtha Sripadaru, the Kattige Muhurtha rituals unfolded gracefully, led by the esteemed Vidwan Herga Vedavyasa Bhat and Raghavendra Kodancha. Devotees fervently offered prayers to Sri Upendra Vittala, the presiding deity of Matha, as well as Sri Chandramoulishwara, Sri Anantheshwara, Sri Madhvacharya, and the iconic Sri Krishna Matha.
Navagrahadaanam was offered on the occasion.
The meticulous process of collecting firewood was initiated by Padmanabha Mestri of Sri Krishna Matha.
The auspicious occasion witnessed the presence of distinguished representatives from Ashta Mutt, along with esteemed priests from the Anegudde temple, including Suryanarayana Upadhyaya, Sridhar Upadhyaya, and Kenja Sridhar Tantri. Notable attendees included B. Gopalacharya, the Brahmana Sabha President, Manjunath Upadhyaya, office-bearers of various organizations, and other eminent personalities. To commemorate this sacred gathering, special jackfruit saplings of the Siddhi variety were distributed among the esteemed dignitaries.
Matha Diwans Muralidhara Acharya, Nagaraj Acharya, and Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Sripadaru’s personal secretary, Prasannaacharya, along with others were present.
