Manipal, June 6, 2023: A skilled medical team comprising Dr. Shiran Shetty, Prof and Head, Dr. Ganesh Bhat, Dr. Atish Shetty, Dr. Balaji, and Dr. Sandesh Shet (Anesthesia) from the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, recently performed a unique endoscopy procedure known as Endoultrasound guided Gastrojejunostomy – GJ.

This procedure was carried out on a patient with gastric outlet obstruction resulting from underlying cancer.

Compared to invasive surgery, this innovative endoscopic technique is less invasive and can be performed on patients who are not suitable candidates for surgical interventions. Additionally, patients undergoing this procedure can be discharged the following day, and it offers a cost-effective alternative.

The medical team was presented with a challenging case involving a 55-year-old individual suffering from pancreatic cancer and gastric outlet obstruction, causing persistent vomiting. After thorough evaluation and extensive discussions with the patient’s relatives, the doctors opted to perform a unique endoscopic procedure called EUS-gastrojejunostomy. This procedure aimed to create a connection between the stomach and small intestine, facilitating easier passage of food. Remarkably, the patient was able to tolerate oral feeds after the successful completion of the procedure.

This achievement marks a significant milestone as it is the first of its kind to be performed in the region. Dr. Shiran Shetty, Professor and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, as well as the Deputy Medical Superintendent, expressed his enthusiasm about the advancements in endoscopy technology, emphasizing its potential to treat various complex diseases in a patient-friendly and cost-effective manner.

Kasturba Hospital, Manipal takes pride in being one of the pioneering medical college hospitals in India to adopt and utilize these cutting-edge endoscopy techniques for the benefit of patients, particularly those from rural and underprivileged backgrounds.

Dr. Anand Venugopal, Chief Operating Officer of Teaching Hospital MAHE, commended the team of doctors and staff members involved in this groundbreaking procedure.

“Currently, the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal is at par with reputed national and international centers in performing major and complex endoscopic procedures, instilling new hope in patients from coastal and central Karnataka,” stated Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, in a press statement.
