District Administration Pays Tribute to Mangaluru Plane Crash Victims
Mangaluru, May 22, 2023: Dakshina Kannada district administration paid homage to the victims of a tragic plane crash that occurred 13 years ago in Mangaluru.
Deputy Commissioner Ravikumar M., along with Additional Deputy Commissioner Krishnamurthy, Assistant Commissioner Raju, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. Kishore Kumar, and other district-level officials, gathered to offer floral tributes at the memorial in Tanir Bavi.
On the fateful morning of May 22, 2010, an Air India flight from Dubai overshot the runway in Mangaluru killing 158. Eight survived the accident.
Among the deceased, the bodies of 12 individuals remained unidentified. These unidentified victims were respectfully cremated on the banks of the river at Tanir Bavi. Subsequently, a memorial was erected at the same location.
“This memorial stands as a tribute to the lives lost in the plane crash on May 22, 2010. It is the responsibility of all government departments to honor these martyrs,” DC Ravikumar said.
Harishchandra, father of one of the victims who tragically lost her life in the crash, shared his heart-wrenching story.
“I was on my way to pick up my daughter, who was returning from Dubai, when I received the news of the accident. It was devastating to learn of my daughter’s demise. Her body was identified by her ring.” he said.
Officials from Mangalore International Airport and New Mangalore Port Authority also took part in the commemorative ceremony, joining the district administration in paying respects to the victims of the Mangaluru plane crash.
