Mangaluru, May 01, 2023: Mangaluru International Airport has announced the opening of its Integrated Cargo Terminal (ICT) to the public on May 1. The ICT has a total area of 1,891 sq.m, including 1,200 sq.m for international cargo and the remaining space for domestic cargo. It has the capacity to handle 9,000 tonnes of both international and domestic cargo annually.

The facility began its operations by managing domestic inbound and outbound cargo on the opening day, with international cargo to follow soon.

The new ICT features 10 truck bays, two dock levelers, and forklifts to ensure efficient handling of inbound and outbound cargo. The facility has separate offices for airlines and customs, ample parking space for all stakeholders, and centralized air conditioning. Additionally, it includes a strong room, cold storage, and dangerous goods storage areas as prescribed by aviation cargo regulators.

The facility is under constant CCTV surveillance and includes dedicated spaces for training, documentation, conferences, and a boardroom. The airport has also set up a pass issuance and frisking booth at the entrance gate, and the facility is monitored round the clock by ASG personnel of CISF. The ICT is equipped with 100 X 100 & 145 X 185 X-Ray baggage inspection systems (XBIS Machine) and explosive trace detection equipment for screening incoming and outgoing goods.

The ICT will manage various types of cargo, including fruits, vegetables, foodstuffs, chilled/frozen fish, spare parts, and textiles internationally. Domestically, it will handle post office (PO) mail, courier items, perishables, valuables (jewelry), blood samples for pharma, human remains, documents/general and e-commerce items, and dangerous goods. The PO mail mostly comprises items sent by a Manipal-based security press to banks, such as cheque books and other government security documents.

According to the airport spokesperson, the dedication of the ICT demonstrates the airport’s commitment to supporting the local trade and industry by boosting air cargo. The spokesperson added that they would soon engage with various trade-related stakeholders to showcase the ICT’s capabilities and help them move their cargo safely and securely to regional and national aviation cargo hubs.
