Udupi, March 05, 2023: Udupi District Deputy Commissioner Kurma Rao has called for a concerted effort to bring down the maternal and infant mortality rate to zero.

In a meeting held at the Zilla Panchayat hall on Friday, he urged doctors from all government and private hospitals to take necessary measures to achieve this goal.

The DC suggested the mother card provided to the pregnant women should have details about the monthly check-ups, including the date of testing, medicines and vaccines to be taken, and any additional examinations required.

He suggested to include screening for heart disease and diabetes, in addition to other common illnesses.

According to data shared in the meeting, out of 11,136 deliveries in the district between April 2022 to January 2023, 4 maternal deaths and 62 neonatal deaths were reported.

Rao urged doctors to take necessary decisions at the earliest to avoid maternity deaths and instructed them to organize workshops on precautionary measures to be taken to reduce maternal and infant mortality.

The DC also instructed the officials of the Women and Child Development Department to provide various self-employment training to gender minorities in the district and provide necessary financial assistance to them.

Present at the meeting were Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Prasanna H, Probationary I. A. S Officer Yatheesh, District Health, and Family Welfare Officer Dr. Nagabhushana Udupa, and implementing officers of the health department and various departments.
