Organ donation brings new hope to six people in need

Manipal, Feb 27, 2023: An accident victim gave life through organ donation to six patients on Monday.

In a tragic road traffic accident that occurred on Feb 25, 2023, at Maravanthe, Bynduru Taluk, Udupi district, Koderi Shilpa Madhav was severely injured and admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal for further treatment. Despite the best efforts of doctors, she did not recover and was declared brain dead twice as per the protocol stipulated by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994.

However, Shilpa Madhav’s husband, Prasanna Kumar, and his family members made a noble decision to donate her viable organs to save other needy patients’ lives. As per the Jeevasarthakathe, SOTTO, Bangalore protocols and decisions, her liver was sent to Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, one kidney was sent to A J Hospital, Mangalore, and one kidney, corneas, and skin were retained by Kasturba Hospital Manipal for registered patients. This selfless act of organ donation helped to save the lives of six people.

Expressing their gratitude, Koderi Shilpa Madhav’s husband and family members said, “Organ donation is a noble cause and Ms Shilpa has committed a great deed even in her death.”

Medical Superintendent Dr. Avinash Shetty also praised the family’s decision, stating that it shows a changing mindset of people towards organ donation, which needs to be emulated by many.

The harvested organs were transferred to recipient hospitals with the support of the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada Police Department through a Green Corridor.
