Illegal sand mining: Two trucks seized
Kundapur, Dec 20, 2022: Mines and Geology Department geologist Sandhya conducted an operation at two places in the wee hours of Wednesday and seized two tippers involved in illegal sand mining and transportation in Sankaranarayana of Vandse Hobli in Kundapur taluk.
The Mines and Geology department had received complaints from the public about illegal sand mining from the Varahi River at several places in Shankaranarayana limits. The team under the guidance of senior geologist Sandeep GU conducted a raid around 6.30 am at Kaiyani in Sankaranarayana village and seized a lorry loaded with sand.
In another case, at 07:00 am, a tipper was seized for transporting sand without a permit on the Sankaranarayana – Haladi road.
As soon as the unauthorized sand mining areas were raided, those who were engaged in illegal sand mining in Bharatkal, Kroda Bylur, and Hemmannu and Kalinajeddu limits of Machattu village under Sankaranarayana limits stopped sand mining and transportation and fled from the spot.
During the site inspection, it was found that the road and landing spots for the boats were constructed on private (patta) lands. Officials said that appropriate legal action would be taken against the owners of such land.
A case has been registered by the geologist and the two lorries used for transporting unauthorized sand along with 20 metric tonnes of sand have been kept in the custody of the Sankaranarayana police station till further legal action is taken.
