Kasturba Hospital organizes Free Thyroid Screening and awareness program

Manipal, May 25, 2022: Dept of Endocrinology of Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal organized World Thyroid Day Awareness and Free Thyroid Screening Program today.

Dr. Sharath K Rao, Dean, KMC inaugurated the program.

“The thyroid-producing hormone controls all the functions of the body. There is a problem if it is more than required and also if it is less than the required quantity. Therefore, it is very important to maintain in balance level. It is important to be checked at least once a year and get proper treatment, if necessary,” he said.

On this occasion Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent said that in India one among ten people has a thyroid problem and will not know it at the beginning unless tested.

“The purpose of observing such health days is to create awareness among the people. Any disease can be fully cured if it is detected at an early stage and treated appropriately. As a part of World Thyroid Day, the Department of Endocrinology headed by Sahana Shetty is creating awareness to the public and conducting thyroid testing free of cost,” he said.

Dr. Sahana Shetty, Head, Department of Endocrinology gave an overview of the program and spoke in detail about thyroid problems and treatment.

More than a thousand people benefited from a free thyroid test.

Every year May 25 is observed as World Thyroid Day.

The theme of this year’s Thyroid Awareness Week is “It’s not you. It‘s your thyroid.” With this theme, Thyroid Federation International (TFI) – the initiator of Thyroid Awareness Week – wants to make it clear that thyroid disorders lead to symptoms that are often misinterpreted by those affected. World Thyroid Day aims at increasing public awareness of thyroid deceases, namely the importance of their timely diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
