SDM’s Yashovarma no more
Belthangady, May 23, 2022: SDME Trust, Ujire secretary Dr. B Yashovarma breathed his last at a hospital in Singapore. He was 67.
Yashovarma, brother of Dr. Hemavathi V Heggade, had served as the Principal of SDM College- Ujire. The news of his death came as a shock to hundreds of his students and collogues as he was actively involved in the college activities till recently. He was admitted to a hospital in Singapore where he breathed his last.
Dr. Yashovarma was one of the dynamic personalities who had a close association with the students as well as the teaching and non-teaching staff.
During his term as the principal, the college received National Award for Best College (Instituted by FJEI), and NAAC Re-Accredition (A-Grade) thrice. The UGC recognized the college as the College with Potential for Excellence.
“While he would be tough on the issues that needed strict implementation, Yashovarma was friendly and would easily mingle with the students. He was a good administrator. His straightforwardness, jovial talks, smiling face, and strict nature will always be remembered. In simple words he was simple, humble and friendly,” one of the lecturers told The Canara Post.
Dr. Yashovarma who did his MSc Botany at Karnataka University in 1977-79, received Ph.D. from the same university in 1986 for the dissertation on ‘Taxonomical and Ecological study of Algae of some soils of Karnataka.’
Phycology was his area of research. He had published 13 research papers in National Research Journals on Algae and Medicinal Plants. He had undertaken two UGC Minor Research Projects.
Dr. Yashovarma served as the Principal of SDM College from September 29, 1993, to December 31, 2015.
He was the recipient of the prestigious Shikshana Premi and Shikshana Ratna-2004 and Award for oneness of Mahaveera and Mahatma-2005 and also Sadhanashree by Rotary-Mangalore.
The mortal remains will be brought in a procession from Charmadi Matturu Panchalingeshwara Temple to Ujire at 1 pm on Tuesday. Later public will be allowed to pay their last respects at SDM College- Ujire.
