Manipal, May 09: Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) organised a marathon called ‘MANIPAL FIT-A-THON’ on account of “Mother’s Day for its staff , students and individuals.

The event aimed at creating awareness on breast and cervical cancer with the theme “Giving up is not an option”. ‘MANIPAL FIT-A-THON’ was organised in collaboration with the FITVIB (Fitness club of KMC), VSO (Volunteer Services Organization), and MRC (Manipal Runners Club).

The event included a Saree run for women (3 km-free), a Marathon (5 km and 10 km) and a Fun Fiesta at KMC, Greens. Over a Thousand students and faculties participated in it. The participants consisted of people from a variety of age groups from young students to senior citizens who were 83 years old.

Shreema Priyadarshini, Athlete – National Gold Medallist and has represented India for Common Wealth games attended the event.

Speaking aon the occassion Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education said that the theme of the event was “Giving up is not an option”.

“We admire the resilience of women who are fighting breast and cervical cancer. These diseases have been plaguing millions of women in the country. With an aim to draw attention & awareness towards these health issues, we decided to organise MANIPAL FIT-A-THON on Mother’s Day. We are extremely pleased to see people coming out in huge numbers and participating in the event,” he said.

Lt Gen (Dr) M D Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education said Women’s health is an issue that needs to be brought to the forefront.

Dr PLNG Rao, Pro Vice Chancellor Health Sciences, MAHE, Dr Narayana Sabhahit, Registrar of MAHE, Indira Ballal, Mrs Kusuma Venkatesh, Heads of Institutions along with senior officials of MAHE, and Members of Udupi Mahila Samaj, were present in the occasion.
