KCCI urges Gadkari to expedite Shiradi Ghat tunnel project
Mangaluru, Dec 21, 2021: Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry has written to the Minister for Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to expedite the Mangaluru – Bengaluru NH 75 Shiradi Ghat tunnel road project.
Gadkari is scheduled to visit Mangaluru on January 9 to lay the foundation stone for various projects in the region.
“We look forward to the crucial project of the Shiradi ghat tunnel (23.6 km) between the Mangaluru – Bengaluru, which will significantly reduce the travel time. We hope the project will be completed in record time for the benefit of both passenger and goods vehicles,” KCCI president Shashidhar Pai Maroor requested in the letter.
“We have been striving for all-weather road connectivity between Mangaluru – Bengaluru (NH75) for over three decades. This route is the main link to the state’s only Major port (New Mangalore Port) from the hinterland,” he said.
“The route passes through the scenic Western Ghats. The state has been suffering especially during monsoons due to landslides and constant repairs. Periodic closure of various stretches on this route due to miserable conditions affects the EXIM trade, Movement of LPG, Agricultural products, etc. The Shiradi Ghat tunnel project would benefit both passengers and goods vehicles,” he added.
He also requested the minister to spare some time to discuss the broader issues faced by the business community using road transport.
