COUNCIL COUNTDOWN
Election for the Local Authorities Constituencies of the Karnataka Legislative Council will be held on December 10. Every election has some interesting developments. The Canara Post will keep you updated the various developments related to this election.
Mangaluru, Nov 10, 2021: The political activity has gained momentum in the coastal districts after the Election Commission declared the date for the Local Authorities Constituencies of the Karnataka Legislative Council.
Of the 25 seats, three are from Coastal Karnataka.
While the nomination will start on Nov 16, the last date for nomination is Nov 23. The election will be held on Dec 10 and counting will be on Dec 14.
The day after the election was declared, both Congress and BJP camps are busy with activities.
In Dakshina Kannada constituency Congress and BJP have one seat each (K Pratap Chandra Shetty and Kota Srinivas Poojary). S L Ghotnekar of Congress represents Uttara Kannada seat.
The voters in this election are the members of Local Authorities (Panchayats, Town Panchayats, Town Municipalities, City Municipalities, and Mangaluru City Corporation).
In the Dakshina Kannada constituency, most of the members in Local Authorities were from Congress and so Congress had control over both the seats until Anna Vinayachandra grabbed it for BJP for a short span.
Again Congress managed to win it back until Blasius M’Dsouza and Pratapchandra Shetty won the election.
But after Blasius M’Douza’s death in 2008, BJP managed to win one seat. Kota Srinivas Poojary won the seat for BJP.
But the 2015 election turned interesting after it witnessed rebellion within the Congress. Former MP and Minister Jayaprakash Hegde who was with the Congress until then contested as a rebel. Similar was the case with Harikrishna Bantwal, a close aide of Janardhan Poojary.
Both quit the Congress and contested as rebel candidates. However Congress managed to get its candidate Pratapchandra Shetty to win the election.
