CITU seeks proper alternative for Central Market traders
Mangaluru, May 31, 2021: The Center of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has strongly condemned the Mangaluru City Corporation for demolishing Central Market without providing proper alternatives for the traders.
“Without any discussion with the traders, the MCC had shifted the activity to APMC last year in the pretext of Covid. The true color was revealed when the administration claimed that the building was in bad condition. They wanted to demolish it and construct a new building in three years,” CITU district general secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal accused in a press statement.
“A meeting was held at APMC in the presence of MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLAs Bharat Shetty, and Vedavyas Kamath when the traders demanded an alternative. The elected representatives had assured to protect the interest of the traders. But even after one year the issue has not been resolved,” he said.
“All of a sudden the central market building has been demolished. About 600 traders and businessmen have depended on the Central Market for decades. They should be provided a proper alternative. In the new building, they should be given preference. If the administration fails, CITU along with like-minded organizations will strongly protest against this,” he added.
