Activists want Govt to supply life saving medicines to the needy in private hospitals

Karwar, April 23, 2021: Activists feel that instead of classifying the hospitals as government and private, the government should ensure the life-saving medicines reaches every needy during the pandemic.

A person from Karwar was admitted to the government hospital for COVID and was shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru after his health condition deteriorated.

When the government wants private hospitals to provide 50 percent of beds to COVID patients, it should also make some arrangements to provide the life-saving drugs to the patients in private hospitals if the latter does not have it

“Doctors in the hospital said that there is a need for Remdesivir for the patient and they do not have enough stock. When I contacted the government officials in Uttara Kannada, I was told that there is stock at the government hospital here. I tried to speak to the officials in our district and also the politicians including Incharge Minister and Health Minister to arrange the medicine for our patient being treated in Mangaluru. But I failed to get a positive response,” Janashakthi Vedike president Madhav B Nayak told The Canara Post.

“They told me that the medicine available with the government institution cannot be diverted to the patient in a private hospital. When the government wants private hospitals to provide 50 percent of beds to COVID patients, it should also make some arrangements to provide the life-saving drugs to the patients in private hospitals if the latter does not have it,” he said.

“I agree that government has to take strict measures to ensure medicines are not wasted or misused. Let the government have a proper guideline and keep a strong vigil. Be it government or private hospital, the government should take care of these patients,” he said.

Nayak mentions about the measures taken by the Goa government.

“In Goa if the private hospitals do not have the medicine, then the government provides it based on demand. However once private hospital has to provide the replacement once it gets the stock. Our state too can follow similar step,” he added.

“If something happens to the patient without timely medicine then I will approach the High Court to file writ petition making the state government as the party,” he warned.
