Karwar, Aug. 18, 2024: The Uttara Kannada district administration has declared a one-day holiday for all Anganwadis, primary and high schools, and pre-university colleges in 11 taluks of the district on August 19, 2025, following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Deputy Commissioner Lakshmi Priya K., who is also the Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, said the decision was taken under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, in view of continuous heavy rainfall and requests made by tahsildars and education officials across the district.

The order covers educational institutions in Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur, Joida, Dandeli, and Haliyal taluks. The DC noted that the precautionary measure was aimed at ensuring the safety of children and preventing inconvenience during the heavy downpour.

The Deputy Directors of the Department of Public Instruction (Karwar and Sirsi), Pre-University Education, and Women & Child Development have been instructed to strictly implement the order and ensure compliance. They have also been directed to adjust academic schedules later to compensate for the lost day.
