Udupi declares holiday for schools and PU Colleges on Aug 18 due to heavy rain alert
Udupi, Aug. 18, 2025: Following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Udupi district administration has declared a holiday for all Anganwadis, government, aided, and private primary and high schools, as well as pre-university and ITI colleges, on August 18, 2025.
Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Swaroopa T.K., in an official notification, stated that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure in view of continuous heavy rainfall across the district. However, no holiday has been declared for degree, postgraduate, diploma, and engineering colleges.
Principals of colleges have been instructed not to make student attendance compulsory and to ensure the safety of students commuting to and from colleges.
The order further directed that classes must not be conducted in weak or dilapidated buildings, and college heads should take adequate safety measures to avoid mishaps. To compensate for the loss of academic hours caused by the precautionary holiday, additional classes may be conducted on Saturdays or Sundays.
Parents and college authorities have been urged to caution students against visiting low-lying areas, ponds, riversides, or the seashore during the ongoing heavy rains. Transportation safety for students and awareness sessions on disaster preparedness in colleges have also been stressed.
For any emergency related to natural disasters, the district administration has advised the public to contact the designated helpline numbers.
