Plan for Utilization of Disaster Management Funds: ZP CEO Dr. Anand K
Mangaluru, Oct 22, 2024: Dakshina Kannada district is set to implement disaster mitigation projects under the state disaster management fund, aimed at reducing the risk of recurring natural calamities.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anand K. urged officials to identify vulnerable areas and submit proposals for necessary projects to mitigate the impact of disasters such as cyclones, landslides, lightning, and floods.
Chairing a meeting at the DC’s office on Tuesday, Dr. Anand highlighted the need for proper drainage systems and awareness programs to prevent future calamities. He stressed the importance of improving local infrastructure and initiating protective measures in at-risk regions.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner, Dr. G. Santosh Kumar, emphasized the urgency of addressing flood-prone areas, especially in regions like Baikampady and Adyapadi, where flooding has been a recurring issue. He noted that mitigation funds would be used for necessary corrective measures.
Regarding coastal management, officials from the Port Department informed the meeting that the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management had identified 11 locations in the district for protective measures against sea erosion. The mitigation plan includes steps like the use of geotextile sandbags and groynes to manage coastal erosion.
Officials were directed to visit potential disaster areas and promptly submit proposals with detailed plans and cost estimates for the necessary works.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner C.L. Anand, and various departmental officers.
