About Chronic pain and Interventional pain management
Chronic pain or pain that persist for more than 3 months usually occurs in the absence of any ongoing injury and therefore does not serve any useful purpose.
Chronic Pain can be considered as a disease in itself. Pain can come from any part of the body: skin, muscles, joints, bones (nociceptive pain); nerves (neuropathic pain or neuralgias), internal organs (visceral pain) or sometimes a combination of above structures (mixed pain).
Chronic pain can arise from many different reasons like degeneration, arthritis, inflammation, nerve damage, disc prolapse, injury, surgery, diabetes and cancer. Sometimes, in conditions like fibromyalgia, pain can be a disease in itself, with no apparent cause.
Interventional pain management manages chronic pain by using an image-guided injection of pain relieving drugs to specific areas of the body.
Interventions are usually performed when pain is intense to interfere with daily activities or when other treatments are unsuccessful in reducing the pain.
Pain Management Services or Pain Clinics, they are specialized health care services focusing upon appropriate diagnosis and management of different kinds of Pain.
The Chronic Pain Service at Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal is a state-of-art, comprehensive pain management services, aiming to help those suffering from chronic intractable pain manage their pain effectively and improve their quality of life.
