Uttara Kannada gears up for Minor Irrigation Census
The team will collect details of the open wells, borewells and also collect details of the streams, lakes, ponds, and other water bodies.
Karwar, Nov 29, 2020: The team of officials will visit every remote corner of Uttara Kannada district collecting details about every water body.
As part of the 6th Minor Irrigation Census, these officials will collect details of all the water bodies for the next three months.
It is not an easy task in Uttara Kannada – the district with a forest cover of about 75 percent and a large number of water bodies. In Malnad Taluks, the houses are situated far away from each other. As the census needs details of every waterbody, the team has to visit even the remotest place in the village.
Minor irrigation census is conducted once in 5 years. The one held now is the 6th one. Though the survey had to be completed already, it has been delayed due to COVID.
Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner Dr. Harish Kumar chaired a meeting in connection to the Minor Irrigation Census.
In every village, the census will be led by the respective Village Accountant. Officials from Electric Supply Company (ESCOM), Rural Development, Minor, and Major irrigation department officials will provide the necessary information.
The team will visit every house to collect details of the open wells, borewells and also collect details of the streams, lakes, ponds, and other water bodies.
“The Tahsildars have been asked to organize training for the officials and personnel involved in the census work. Experts from the statistics department should be invited to provide training,” Deputy Commissioner Dr. Harish Kumar told The Canara Post.
“The data collected will be helpful in future during policymaking. Meanwhile, as we will have details of all the water bodies in this census, we can plan how to mitigate water problem during summer,” he added.
